Funny Girl is based on incidents in the life of Ziegfeld Follies leading lady, Fanny Brice shortly before, during and after World War I and tells her rise from being an uncomfortable, unattractive, stage-struck young girl to national stardom. Her narrative starts with her young days in New York's Lower East Side, where the young starlet in the making goofs her way through burlesque and vaudeville, wishing to make it big despite being put down by her friends and family, who tell her she isn't pretty enough for the stage. It also covers the story of her love for and subsequent failed union to Nick Arnstein, a charming, man about town whose allure Fanny finds seductive. The show is full of the breathtaking music that anyone would come to expect from a show of this quality and included are several show-stopping numbers such as "People" and "Don't Let It Rain on My Parade".
