Durham Performing Arts Center | Durham, North Carolina

Old and new theatre fans alike in North Carolina now have another reason to be excited, as The Book of Mormon will be having a limited season in Durham, performing at Durham Performing Arts Center on Sunday 13th April 2025. Experience unending laughter from watching the production of the same creators of South Park and the musical Avenue Q.

The Book of Mormon is a musical about the way religion is taught, specifically of the journey of Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, who through original methods, attempt to convert villagers of a local village in Uganda. This Tony Award-winning musical, that has gone on to have successful showings in the U.S., London, and Australia, running for more than a decade to date, unmasks the way religious stories are told, with comedy through classical theatre and showtunes.

Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham are two missionaries of the Latter-day saints (LDS) sent on a mission to a local Ugandan village. Their mission is to convert the villagers to their religion, but they realize upon their arrival that their job is more complex than they had imagined, given the pile of local issues that the villagers are against such as oppression, an HIV/AIDS epidemic, and poverty among others. The pair then gradually realize that they must use more creative means to succeed in their mission than the orthodox way that they know.

It is in this duo's unique dynamic where the performance of The Book of Mormon excels – allowing the subject matter of religion to be blasphemed and injected with comedy, showtunes, and a bit of rude language, yet still remaining unobjectionable to the general public. Since its opening night in 2011, the The Book of Mormon has been received positively despite its manner of challenging religious belief. The Mormon church itself supported the musical, buying ads and releasing slogans specifically that stated: “You’ve seen the play, now read the book.” In its West End productions, the repeatedly sold-out shows were a testament to The Book of Mormon’s success. Though most viewers were already expecting a shock given the content and theme of the play, according to The Guardian, it was even to their surprise that “suddenly you realize you’re in for not just humour but a seriously fine night of entertainment, and it just keeps on getting better.” The musical’s run in Australia met with a similar positive reception, with the Sydney Morning Herald even declaring that the Book of Mormon is a “dynamite production of a show that can lay fair claim to being the funniest Broadway musical of all time.”

What comes as no surprise however is that because of the musical's creativity, The Book of Mormon’s several productions all over the world have earned it nine Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, three Outer Circle Critics awards, four Olivier Awards, and two Helpmann Awards.

This upbeat, happy, and totally silly musical continues its tour in North Carolina.
